Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The Pelicans (19-13) led wire to wire Wednesday, beating the Lynchburg Hillcats 8-2 at TicketReturn.com Field. Trever Adams hit his fifth home run of the season for the Pelicans, who scored in five of their eight offensive innings. The Birds are now 11-4 at home and remain the front runner in the Carolina League southern division.
Chris Grayson finished a home run shy of the cycle, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Rougned Odor and Jake Skole tallied two hits apiece contributing to an 11-hit attack.
Right-hander Nick Martinez (3-2) got the win, working a season-best six innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Righty Navery Moore (2-4) was saddled with the loss, surrendering five runs, four earned, on six hits over 4.2 innings.
The Adams homer put the Pelicans up 2-0 in the first inning. The Birds jumped out to a 5-1 lead after five innings. Preston Beck laced a sacrifice fly to left field in the fourth inning, putting the Birds up 3-1. The run was set up by a walk to Kellin Deglan, a single from Grayson and a sac bunt from Patrick Cantwell. Drew Robinson plated a run in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout.
Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, the Hillcats had the potential tying run at the plate in the form of David Rohm. With runners on first and second, Martinez got Rohm to fly out to deep center.
The Pelicans pulled away in the late stages, scoring two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Grayson fueled the two-run, sixth-inning rally with his second triple of the season.
The Hillcats pushed across an unearned run in the second inning on an RBI fielder's choice from Elmer Reyes. The rally was aided by a Luis Sardinas throwing error.
Paul Schwendel, Francisco Mendoza and Ryan Harvey each added a scoreless inning out of the bullpen. Harvey struck out the side to preserve the win in the ninth.
The Birds are six games above .500 for the first time this season.
The Pelicans will try and sweep the Hillcats Thursday at TicketReturn.com Field. Right-hander Luke Jackson (3-1, 2.05) will tangle with James Hoyt (2-0, 1.78).
Tomorrow is a Thirsty Thursday at TicketReturn.com Field, featuring select $1 beers from 6-8 p.m. It will be "Great Gatsby Night" as the Pelicans will pay tribute to the 1920s.
