DeMichele Sends Dash to Walk-Off Victory

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 8, 2013) - Joey DeMichele's 11th-inning walk-off home run propelled the Dash to a thrilling 12-9 win over the Frederick Keys Wednesday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark.

After squandering a pair of opportunities to win it in the ninth and 10th innings, Winston-Salem (16-16) started the inning well in the eleventh with Brent Tanner and Adam Heisler both singling, putting the tying run in scoring position with one out for DeMichele. The second baseman hit a towering three-run shot off Marcel Prado (1-3) to right-center field to send 4,011 fans home happy.

The Dash avoided a rain-shortened sweep, which would have been the franchise's first in BB&T Ballpark history. Winston-Salem has won at least one game in all 68 series played at BB&T Ballpark.

With Frederick (18-14) leading 9-5, Winston-Salem would tie things up in the bottom of the seventh. Martin Medina got things started, driving in a run with a double. Heisler followed with an RBI single, and Chris Curley launched a homer beyond the left field wall to even things up.

The Dash got their offense going right away against Keys' starter Tyler Wilson. Heisler started things off with triple, and DeMichele drove him in one batter later with a double. DeMichele moved to third on a wild pitch with Kevan Smith at the plate, and Smith bounced out to short to double Winston-Salem's lead.

After Frederick pulled within one in the third, Winston-Salem would tack on to their lead in the fourth. The inning started with three consecutive doubles with Curley, Smith and Mark Haddow doing the damage, the latter two producing runs. Later in the frame, Grant Buckner put the lead at four with an RBI single.

Things completely turned around in the fifth inning when the Keys took the lead after a six-run frame. Starter Bryan Blough had been rolling along before surrendering five of the six runs Frederick scored in the frame. The Keys added to their lead in the seventh, as a Steve Bumbry two-run shot made it 9-5.

Winston had a great chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth when Medina led off with a double. Yoandy Barroso came in to pinch run and moved to third on a wild pitch. The Keys' David Walters then uncorked another wild pitch, and Barroso was thrown out trying to score to end the threat and send the game to extras. The Dash would then load the bases in the tenth but were not able to push across the game-winning run.

The Dash are off on Thursday but will be back at it on Friday when they open up a four-game series against the Potomac Nationals at Pfitzner Stadium. Righty Chris Bassitt (1-0, 1.95) will be on the mound for Winston-Salem, while Potomac's starter is yet to be announced. The Pregame Dash will begin at 6:50, with first pitch to follow at 7:05.
