CHARLESTON, SC - David Adams drove home both runs and a quintet of Charleston hurlers combined to strike out 15 Greenville batters as the RiverDogs shutout the Drive, 2-0, in South Atlantic League action Friday night in front of 3,864 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
The RiverDogs begin their first eight-game homestand of the season with a victory and improve to 8-2 at home and 13-10 overall while the Drive falls to 12-11.
Charleston claimed an early 1-0 advantage in the first inning when Ray Kruml drew a leadoff walk, stole second base and moved to third on a groundout. Kruml scored on Adams' sacrifice fly to right.
The RiverDogs doubled the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third when Carmen Angelini was hit by a pitch, stole second and sprinted home when Adams lined a double to the left-center field gap for his second RBI on the night.
Adams finished the game 3-for-4, accounting for half of the RiverDogs' six hits. Also securing hits for Charleston were Brian Baisley, Taylor Grote and Mitch Abeita.
Making a spot start for the RiverDogs, right-hander Hector Noesi baffled Drive batters for 3.2 innings as he scattered two hits and struck out five of the 13 batters he faced.
The quartet of relief pitchers - Brandon Braboy, Ryan Flannery, Cory Arbiso and Pat Venditte - combined to silence Greenville. The four fanned 10 and allowed only one walk while scattering four hits.
Brayboy earned the victory, which marked his first win of the season. In the process, he pitched 2.1 innings and struck out four while Flannery pitched the seventh inning and fanned three. Arbisio threw the eighth frame and struck out one while Venditte earned his seventh save as he struck out two of the three batters he faced. Venditte, pro baseball's lone ambidextrous pitcher threw right handed to the first two batters and then switched to strike out the final batter left-handed.
Greenville's Bryan Price (2-1) lost for the first time this season as he went 5.1 frames and permitted both runs on five hits while walking one and striking out five.
Tim Federowicz led Greenville as he slapped two hits, while Kade Keowen and David Marks recorded the other two.
The RiverDogs and Drive square off in Game 2 of their four-game set Sunday at 5:05 p.m. as Charleston gives the ball to right-hander David Phelps (2-0, 2.42 ERA) while Greenville counters with righty Casey Kelly (3-0, 0.90 ERA).
