Aces Wild as Indians Fall 9-3 in Front of Sellout Crowd

August 28, 2016 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Spokane Indians News Release

Spokane, WA - The Indians and Dust Devils showed up at the same poker table but Tri-City arrived armed with a pair of aces. One night after getting shut down by eighth overall pick Cal Quantrill, the Indians didn't fare any better against fellow first-rounder Eric Lauer as the Dust Devils won 9-3 in front of sellout crowd of 6,919 fans at Avista Stadium for Military Appreciation Night presented by The Spokesman-Review, KHQ, The Big 99.9 Coyote Country, 700 ESPN, and The Current.

Lauer, the 25th overall pick in this year's draft from Kent State, held Spokane's sputtering offense to just one run on two hits over four sterling frames. His outing was nearly a mirror image of Quantrill's start on Friday night, who went four innings while allowing one run on three hits. Lauer was followed on the mound by Adrian De Horta (2-1), who picked up the win after allowing just two runs - both unearned - in four innings of relief.

The Dust Devils entered this series as the league's worst offense but certainly didn't look like it against Kyle Cody (2-5) as they exploded for six runs in the third inning highlighted by a three-run blast from G.K. Young. Tri-City has now scored 16 runs in the past two games against Spokane after averaging just 2.88 in their first nine matchups with the Indians this year.

Spokane scored once in the third on an RBI ground out from Charles Leblanc and twice in the sixth on an error and a Carlos Garay run-scoring fielder's choice. Leblanc finished the night 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles while Mark Vasquez allowed just one run in four strong innings of relief. The loss dropped the Indians to 9-20 in the second half and 28-39 overall.
