Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release

KEIZER, Oregon -- Though Volcanoes fans may have missed out on seeing a perfect game on the field tonight, they still got to experience a touch of greatness when baseball legend Don Larsen, the only player to pitch a perfect game in a World Series, visited Volcanoes Stadium to sign free autographs.

Unfortunately, that was where the greatness ended. After 23 combined runs, including five home runs, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes fell to the Eugene Emeralds 14-9 in the second game of a three-game series. With the win, Eugene clinched the series win.

In the first inning, Emeralds shortstop Yeiler Peguero singled to left, then stole second. Volcanoes starter Stephen Woods then walked designated hitter Zack Short. Two wild pitches later, Peguero and Short moved over easily. One batter later, both runners make it home on a fly ball to center from second baseman Trent Giambrone.

The Volcanoes responded in the bottom of the second when Eugene starter Bryan Hudson walked right fielder Heath Quinn. A double from left fielder Ashford Fulmer then moved Quinn to third. He then scored on a ground out by first baseman Ryan Kirby, moving Fulmer to third. One batter later, second baseman Kevin Rivera singled on a line drive to right to bring Fulmer home and end the inning tied at two apiece.

The first home run of the evening came in the top of the third from Emeralds' second baseman Trent Giambrone, bringing third baseman Wladimir Galindo along with him to take the lead. The next batter, catcher Tyler Payne, doubled but that was all the action Eugene could produce and the inning remained at 4-2.

Fans got to see why the Volcanoes are one of the best hitting teams in the Northwest League in the bottom of the third when Quinn, designated hitter Gio Brusa and catcher John Riley ripped three impressive homers over the right field fence, scoring five runs to give the Volcanoes the lead at 7-4.

Eugene put another run on the board in the top of the fifth when Galindo grounded out to bring Peguero home from third, but the Volcanoes were able to get it back in their next at-bat. After a walk for Quinn, Fulmer doubled a second time, bringing Quinn home to maintain the two-run difference at 8-5.

However, the Volcanoes lead would not last as Eugene first baseman Jose Paniagua hit the fifth home run on the night with two men on. Two back-to-back doubles from right fielder Jose Gonzalez and centerfielder D.J. Wilson puts runners on second and third, and a triple from Peguero would bring them home. Peguero then scored on a sacrifice fly from Short, and the inning ends with the Emeralds leading 11-8.

The Volcanoes got one more run from shortstop Ryan Howard in the bottom of the seventh, but that was the end of Volcanoes scoring for the night. Eugene tacked on two more from Gonzalez and Wilson in the eighth, and one in the ninth for good measure from left fielder Kevonte Mitchell, to secure the win at a painful 14-9.

Matt Pope is saddled with the loss for the Volcanoes, while Emeralds starter Bryan Hudson gots the win.

The Volcanoes will be back tomorrow for the third and final game of the series against the Eugene Emeralds at 5:05 P.M. at Volcanoes Stadium. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
