Alaska Aces News Release
Wes Goldie and several Alaska Aces players had a homecoming of sorts on Wednesday night as the Alaska Aces travelled to play the Victoria Salmon Kings on Wednesday. However, two goals from Jeff Caister and Milan Gajic helped spoil the party as the Salmon Kings beat the Aces 6-3. The Aces record dropped to 24-17-3 on the season. The clubs will finish a three-game set this weekend on Friday and Saturday. The clubs traded goals early in the game when Milan Gajic scored 2:41 into the hockey game. Alaska answered when Tyler Ruegsegger buried a rebound 75 seconds later to even the score 1-1 after one period. The Aces outshot the Kings 10-9 in the frame.
Victoria took control in the second period when they got a pair of goals from Jeff Caister on a power play and Ryan Dingle even strength. The Kings took a 3-1 lead into the final period. Both teams had eight shots on goal in the second period.
Early in the third, Victoria pulled away with two more early goals. First, Caister scored another power play goal 52 seconds into the period, and then Rick Cleaver added another at 2:25 to make the score 5-1 Salmon Kings. The Aces tried to get back in the game as Brian Swanson got Alaska back on the board at 11:44, and Brandon Coccimiglio scored his first pro goal at 17:52, but that's as close as they got. Gajic was awarded a goal in the final minute when he was tripped up at center ice while skating towards an empty net. Former Salmon Kings, Wes Goldie and Scott Howes each had an assist on Swanson's third period goal.
Gerald Coleman (19-11-1) made 19 saves on 24 shots, taking the loss. David Shantz (15-16-3) earned the win, making 29 saves on 32 shots. The Aces power play went 0-5, while the Salmon Kings went 2-5. The Aces outshot the Kings 32-25 in the game.
The Aces will return to face the Salmon Kings again on Friday and Saturday, before returning on Feb. 11th-13th to host the Stockton Thunder.
