Aces Drop Exhibition Opener to Mavericks 5-2

Andrew Courtney and Josh Holmstrom each scored twice, and Kyle Burroughs had a goal and an assist as the Missouri Mavericks defeated the Alaska Aces 5-2 Monday in an exhibition game at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.

Alaska scored in the first minute of play as David Eddy's wrister beat Parker Milner low at the 31 second mark.

Andrew Courtney scored the first of his two goals at 9:41 with a power play tally and it was 1-1 after one period.

In the second period, Courtney tapped in a puck that Alaska goaltender Steven Summerhays lost in the blue ice, and Burroughs followed with another goal before the Aces Liam Stewart snapped a sharp wrist shot under the crossbar to cut the Mavs advantage to 3-2 at the end of two periods.

Holmstrom tallied twice in the third, the second into an open net to finish the scoring.

The two teams played a full five-minute practice 3 on 3 overtime without any goals.

Missouri had 33 shots on goal, Alaska 27. The Mavericks were 2-4 on the powerplay, the Aces were 0-5.

The same two teams play again Tuesday night in another exhibition tilt at 7:15pm AK time.
