Evansville IceMen News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN - The Evansville IceMen, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Ottawa Senators and AHL's Binghamton Senators, and Head Coach Al Sims announced today that the team trimmed its training camp roster to 24 ahead of the October 17 season opener versus Indy. The IceMen have waived forwards Matt Harlow, Radoslav Illo, J.P. Labardo and Robin Soudek, and announced the signing of veteran forward Matt Hussey. Forward Ryan Penny was also assigned to Evansville from Binghamton.
Hussey, 36, comes to the IceMen with 12 years of pro hockey experience. The 6'1, 209 lbs. forward has played 21 career NHL games in stints with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2003-04 and 2005-06, and the Detroit Red Wings in 2006-07. He spent six seasons in the German professional league from 2008-14 and most recently played for Nuernberg Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers in 2013-14. The native of New Haven, CT has 167 points (74-93-167) in 381 career AHL games and four points (2-2-4) in his time in the NHL. Hussey's top year as a pro in North America came in 2005-06, when he set career highs for goals (21) and assists (31) in 65 AHL games for the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins.
Penny, 21, starts his first professional season in Evansville after taking part in Binghamton's camp. The winger from Fall River, Nova Scotia put up big numbers last year in the QMJHL in Canada, where he finished his junior hockey career by tallying 70 points (32-38-70) in 66 games for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. The 6'0, 192 lbs forward spent five years of juniors in the QMJHL, where he played a total of 305 games between Rouyn-Noranda and the Moncton Wildcats. Penny had 17 playoff points (9-8-17) in 29 career postseason games. He signed with Binghamton as a free agent in July.
