Aces begin Kelly Cup chase next Monday and Tuesday

Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Regardless of opponent, the Alaska Aces will begin their quest for back-to-back ECHL championships at Sullivan Arena next Monday and Tuesday, April 9-10.

Tickets for those games, both of which will start at 7:15 p.m., are on sale now, with Alaska's opponent still a question mark. The most likely candidates are Phoenix (if the Aces finish first in the National Conference) or Victoria (if Alaska places second), but Fresno and Long Beach remain long-shot possibilities. Alaska went 5-0-1 against Phoenix this year, lost just once in 11 games against Victoria, but have not played the Salmon Kings since mid-January, before Victoria began a late-season surge that includes a current six-game winning streak.

Despite managing just one point out of a possible four last weekend in Las Vegas, Alaska (46-16-7) still holds a one-point lead in the race for first place overall in the league entering this week. But should the Wranglers win all four of their remaining games, they would un-seat the Aces as Brabham Cup champions. If Alaska can sweep its final three games against Utah and Las Vegas stumbles just once, even in overtime or a shootout, then the Aces would become the first team in ECHL history to win the regular season crown in two straight seasons. If the teams end in a tie with respect to overall points, then Alaska also would claim first overall by virtue of the league's first tie-breaker, total victories.

The Aces open their series against last-place Utah (22-39-8), Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. The Grizzlies have been eliminated from playoff contention and have gone winless in their last seven games, but remain the last team to beat Alaska at Sullivan Arena, 6-4 on January 5. Since that loss, the Aces have gone 17-0-1 at home. The final two games of the series and the regular season will be played Friday and Saturday at 7:15 p.m. Tickets for the games against the Grizzlies as well as the 2007 Kelly Cup playoffs are now available at participating Fred Meyer locations or by logging onto www.alaskaaces.com.
