Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Match-up
The IronBirds will attempt to snap a four-game losing streak tonight at the Brooklyn Cyclones (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the New York Mets). After trailing 2-0 for much of last night's game, the Cyclones mounted a two-out rally in the seventh inning. With two on, Javier Rodriguez hit a base-clearing double to tie the game. Then in the ninth, Rodriguez worked a two-out walk. Luke Stewart knocked him in with a game-winning double. The IronBirds will have their ace on the hill tonight in Parker Bridwell. The right-hander has the only win on the IronBirds pitching staff, after tossing five shutout innings against Hudson Valley on opening night. He'll go up against Brooklyn's number one starter Eduardo Aldama.
Losing Streak
The IronBirds have lost four straight games, but not by much. Aberdeen has lost the last four games by a combined five runs. In two of the losses, the IronBirds blew a lead in the seventh inning or later. Also in two of the losses, the IronBirds have put the tying run in scoring position in their final at bat, but have not been able to push him across.
Hot Pitchers
Despite starting off 1-4, the IronBirds have gotten solid pitching performances from all five starters. An IronBirds starting pitcher has not allowed more than three earned runs in a start yet this season. The team's ERA so far is 3.22.
Cold Hitters
As a team, the IronBirds are batting just .236. The team has scored just 18 runs through the first five games of the season (an average of 3.6 runs per game). In addition, IronBirds hitters have grounded into a New York-Penn League leading eight double play balls, spoiling potential rallies.
Brooklyn Beat-Downs
The four-game losing streak the IronBirds are stuck in isn't the only losing streak they are a part of. With last night's loss, the IronBirds have now dropped nine straight games to the Cyclones. Their last win against Brooklyn came nearly a year ago, on June 26, 2010. Aberdeen has also lost six straight at MCU Park. The Last time the IronBirds won in Brooklyn was July 28, 2009.
