ABERDEEN IRONBIRDS (32-40) vs. CONNECTICUT TIGERS (38-35)
LHP Tyler Sexton (1-6, 6.64) vs. RHP Brennan Smith (1-6, 3.34)
Ripken Stadium Aberdeen, MD | Saturday September 4, 2010 | 7:05 p.m. | Game #73 Home #36
Tonight's Match-up
The Aberdeen IronBirds play their fifth straight game against the Connecticut Tigers (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Detroit Tigers) tonight at Ripken Stadium. The IronBirds have lost all four meetings with the Tigers this season, and have dropped five straight games. Aberdeen will have left-hander Tyler Sexton (1-6, 6.64) on the bump. Sexton is coming off a strong start against the Vermont Lake Monsters. He allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in six innings of work. Sexton got a no-decision, but the IronBirds ended up winning the game 7-2. He'll go up against right-hander Brennan Smith (1-6, 3.34).
Last Game
The IronBirds dropped their fifth straight game last night as they fell to the Tigers 7-6. Each of Aberdeen's four losses to the Tigers has been by one run. Last night, the IronBirds came from four runs down to tie the ball game in the fourth. The Tigers held a 7-5 lead in the ninth when Aberdeen began to rally. Jeremy Nowak doubled, and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Mychal Givens then reached with one man down, representing the tying run. Miguel Mejia retired Blair Dunlap and Manny Machado in order to end the ball game.
Limping to the Finish Line
With last night's loss to the Tigers, Aberdeen has dropped five games in-a-row and nine of its last ten games. During this stretch, the IronBirds have been swept twice (three games at the Brooklyn Cyclones and three games at Connecticut). Aberdeen has also lost each of the past four games by just one run.
Machado's Start
Baltimore Orioles first-round pick Manny Machado is off to a great start at the plate with the IronBirds. Despite the team being 0-5 since he was added to the starting lineup, Machado has picked up at least one hit in each game he has played. He's currently batting .316 (6-19) with a double, an RBI, a run scored, two walks and two strikeouts.
More New Faces
The Orioles added LHP Aaron Wirsch and RHP Parker Bridwell to the IronBirds roster on August 31. RHPs Scott Copeland and Clay Schrader were both promoted to Delmarva to make room for the new players. Wirsch was selected in the seventh round of the 2009 draft out of El Toro High School in California. Bridwell was selected in the ninth round of the 2010 draft and made his professional debut last week with the Gulf Coast League Orioles.
