5-run Inning Helps Lead Lake Monsters To Doubleheader Split On Saturday

STATEN ISLAND, NY --- The Vermont Lake Monsters scored five runs in the top of the third inning for a 7-2 victory over Staten Island in the second game of a New York-Penn League doubleheader Saturday night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark after the Yankees had taken the opener 3-1 with two runs in bottom of the sixth.

The nightcap was scoreless until the third when the Lake Monsters had the bases loaded with one-out and Jason Martinson, who was 2-for-2 with two runs in game two, lined an 0-2 pitch to right for a two-run double. After a strikeout and walk reloaded the bases, Wilfri Pena delivered a two-run single to left and Justin Miller scored on a wild pitch for a 5-0 Vermont lead.

Pena, making his first start for the Lake Monsters since August 4th, led off the sixth inning with a double and scored on a Chad Mozingo RBI single. Pena went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI, while Mozingo was 3-for-4 with a run and RBI for Vermont. Luis Parache was 2-for-2 with a run and triple for Staten Island (34-49).

Lake Monsters starter Matt Swynenberg (5-2) allowed one run on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts over five innings to pick up his team-high fifth victory of the season, while Dustin Crane gave up a run on two hits over the final two innings. Yankee starter Dustin Hobbs (0-2) was charged with five runs (four earned) on five hits over four innings for the loss.

Game one Vermont starter Taylor Jordan retired the first 13 batters that he faced and had two strikeouts in each of the first four innings, but the Yankees tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth on three straight one-out singles before Jordan hit Jeff Farnham to force home the tying run.

The Yankees took the lead in the sixth when Shane Brown scored from second on a one-out fielding error by third baseman Blake Kelso and Kyle Roller followed with an RBI double for a 3-1 lead. Jordan (2-3) was charged with three runs (two earned) on five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings for the loss.

Vermont got its only run of the opener in the third inning when Hendry Jimenez led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Kelso RBI single to center. David Freitas and Ronnie LaBrie both had two hits in game one for the Lake Monsters, while Staten Island starter Kramer Sneed allowed one run on four hits over 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision.

Vermont (35-38) will play its final game of the 2010 season at Staten Island on Sunday beginning at 4:00 pm.
