Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Game
Following their first rain-out of the season, the Aberdeen IronBirds return home tonight to take on the Hudson Valley Renegades (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays). Friday night, the IronBirds won their third straight game, blowing out the Renegades 10-3. Aberdeen scored seven runs in the fourth inning to take a lead they would never relinquish. Tonight, the IronBirds will have right-hander Matt Hobgood on the hill. Hobgood has been hit hard in each of his last two outings. He was the first-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles in the 2009 draft. The renegades will counter with right-hander Trevor Shull. He's making his first start of the season for Hudson Valley.
Quite the Turn Around
After a six-game stretch in which the IronBirds went 1-5 and scored a combined nine runs, Aberdeen has scored 19 total runs on 20 hits over its past two games. The IronBirds have raised their team batting average to .209 in the month of August.
It's called a winning streak...
The IronBirds won their third game in-a-row Friday night. The three-game winning streak is a season-long for the IronBirds. In addition, Aberdeen improved to 3-2 in the month of August and clinched a winning road trip.
Revenge Against the Renegades
Prior to Friday night's win, the IronBirds lost six straight games to the Renegades. Aberdeen hadn't beat Hudson Valley since opening night. The last time the IronBirds visited Dutchess Stadium they were swept in two games by a combined score of 23-1.
Howard Wins Again
Left-handed pitcher Trent Howard picked up his team-leading third win of the season on Friday night. He surrendered three runs, all earned, over five innings of work. Howard, who has become one of the IronBirds best starting pitchers, has a 2.78 ERA.
Hobgood's Recovery
The IronBirds will have former first round pick Hobgood on the hill tonight. The right-hander has allowed 15 runs (all earned) in his last 4.1 innings of work. He's currently recovering from a strained rotator cuff, which was discovered during the off-season. Opposing hitters are batting .433 against him this season.
