Jamestown Jammers News Release
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - The Jamestown Jammers rallied time and time again, but, in the end, it wasn't enough as they fell to the State College Spikes, 7-6, in 12 innings at Diethrick Park Sunday night.
The Jammers came back to tie the game twice in the late innings and had a plethora of opportunities to win the game, but State College capitalized on both Jamestown errors, including a pivotal one in the 12th, to earn their seventh win in 10 tries. The loss drops the Jammers three games behind Auburn for the division lead.
Rand Smith led the Jamestown offense with three hits, three runs and a RBI, and Nestor Castillo chipped in three singles. Austin Barnes roped two doubles, and Josh Adams chipped in two hits with a two bagger.
The Jammers broke through in the third inning to take an early lead. Ryan Goetz extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single then went to third on a Barnes double. Dayleg lifted a sacriï¬Âce ï¬ây to center to plate the only run of the frame.
State College had an answer in the fourth with a run of their own on a Derek Trent two-out double, but Jamestown would retake the lead in the bottom half.
Smith started it by reaching on a two-base throwing error then moved to third on a ground out. Castillo hit a ball 20 feet for an inï¬Âeld single to score Smith.
The seesaw battle continued in the ï¬Âfth after Kirk Singer roped a two-run homer over the left ï¬Âeld fence to give the Spikes the advantage for the ï¬Ârst time. Then, a Chris Lashmet single after a Samuel Gonzalez tripled pushed the lead to two in the sixth.
In the home half, Jamestown had an opportunity to not only tie the game, but take the lead; however, the purple and green had to settle for just one run. After loading the bases with one out, Goetz hit a sacriï¬Âce ï¬ây to score Smith from third and advance the other runners one base. Then, the next batter popped out to end the threat.
Another bases loaded, one-out situation emerged in the seventh inning, and the Jammers only got one run again. Dayleg, Adams and Smith all singled before Jobduan Morales hit a ï¬âare to right to tie the game, but the following hitter bounced into a double play to end the threat.
The Spikes got two runs in the eighth inning on a single, three walks and a ï¬Âelder's choice to seemingly put the game out of reach; however, the Jammers found a way to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Josh Adams led off with a double then scored on a Smith single. The Jamestown outï¬Âelder swiped second base with one out, and it looked like the game would end when Castillo bounced one to second base, but ï¬Ârst baseman Alex Dickerson dropped the ball to allow Smith to score to tie the game.
The score would remain deadbolted at six until the 12th inning. Dickerson redeemed himself with a single to start the frame and advanced to second on a passed ball. After a walk, Trent bounced into what appeared to be a double play ball, but the relay throw skipped away from Morales at ï¬Ârst to allow the winning run to score.
Dickerson paced the State College offense with two hits and three runs scored. Singer belted the homer, Gonzalez added a triple and Trent and Freeman both contributed a double.
The two teams will wrap up the series Monday at 7:05 p.m. at Diethrick Park.
