August 25, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
A missed squeeze sign led to a walk-off grand slam by Mark Trumbo in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Beloit Snappers, 5-1, in front of 2,455 fans on Oncology Associates Cancer Awareness night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The extra inning win was only the Kernels third of the 2006 season and their first since May 30th. Cedar Rapids was 2-13 in extra inning games prior to tonight's dramatic win.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th, Kernels Manager Bobby Magallanes called for a squeeze bunt attempt, but Trumbo missed the sign. Brad Coon, who was on third, broke for the plate with the pitch and was within 15 feet of home plate when Trumbo took a full swing and launched his 13th home run of the season over the Randy Kuehl Honfidence Pavilion.
The late-inning heroics made Kernels reliever Chris Howell (2-6) the winner and saddled Dan Leatherman (0-1) with the loss.
The Kernels were held to only three hits by Beloit starter Eddie Morlan over five innings as Morlan struck out five. Kernels starter Amalio Diaz kept the Kernels in the game as he gave up nine hits and one run over seven innings of work with 3 K's and no walks.
Josh Davies was 2 for 4 tonight with a double, triple and RBI as the Kernels only managed six hits on the night.. Trumbo's home run broke a 2 for 19 slump (.105) and was his first since August 12th.
Game three between the Kernels and Snappers takes place on Saturday night at 7 pm as Tommy Mendoza (10-6) starts for the Kernels against Zach Ward (1-3).
Saturday will be Cargill/Special Olympics night at the ballpark and will feature a great fireworks show after the game, sponsored by Cargill. There will also be a silent auction during the game with proceeds to benefit Special Olympics. Items include autographed sports items, restaurant and spa packages, sports tickets and even a night in a Kernels Diamond Suite during the 2007 season.
Tickets for Cargill/Special Olympics Night can be ordered on the internet at www.kernels.com or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at (319) 896-7560 after 10 am Saturday morning.
