\'Heat Wave' Hits Rochester, Amerks Lose 2-1
December 11, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The Amerks were defeated 2-1 by their North Division opponent the Abbotsford Heat tonight at The Blue Cross Arena. The loss snaps an Amerks' 10-game home regulation win streak and drops the team to 19-6-1-0 (39 points). Abbotsford improves to 15-12-2-2 (34 points).
Rochester's only goal of the night was scored unassisted by third star Graham Mink. Abbotsford was led by Cam Cunning and Brett Sutter, both scoring a goal. Heat goaltender Matt Keetley made 37 saves to earn his third win of the season. Cunning received second-star honors, while Keetley gained first.
Sutter's goal, the only in the first period, came off a large rebound which was fired past a diving Alexander Salak. After making an acrobatic save the Amerk netminder was unable to regain position and stop the shot by Sutter. John Armstrong was credited with the assist. Cunning doubled the lead in the second when he deflected a point shot by Keith Aulie into the back of the net.
Rochester narrowed the lead to one nearly 10 minutes later when Graham Mink got his team-leading 10th goal of the season on the power-play. Mink chased down a dumped puck which bounced off of the end boards and in front of the net.
Rochester was unable to light the lamp for the remainder of the game. Although having many opportunities, the Amerks were a victim of unlucky bounces and post shots.
Rochester takes on the defending Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears at the Giant Center on Saturday, December 12th. The 7:00 p.m. contest will be the first leg of a home-and-home series and the first of four scheduled meetings between the league's keystone members this season. The Amerks were 1-1-0-0 in the season series a year ago with Hershey and are 181-200-53 all-time against the Washington Capitals' affiliate.
