A Win by Committee, Saints Beat Saltdogs 4-1

ST. PAUL, MN - The regularly scheduled game on Tuesday night was scheduled for 7.0 innings. That allowed St. Paul Saints manager George Tsamis to go bullpen by committee and four different pitchers stepped up. The Saints got just enough offense to defeat the Lincoln Saltdogs 4-1 on Tuesday night at CHS Field in front of 7,382. The win improves the Saints record to 28-15.

Karch Kowalczyk got the start, just the third of his career, and allowed just a walk through the first two innings of work. In the third he gave up a leadoff single to John Lytle and Ivan Marin sacrificed him to second. After Kowalczyk got Teodoro Martinez to ground out, Jordan Jess came out of the bullpen to take over for Kowalczyk. He gave up an RBI single to right to Tyler Pfeffer giving the Saltdogs a 1-0 lead. Kowalczyk went 2.2 innings allowing one run on one hit while walking one and striking out one.

The Saints responded immediately in the bottom of the inning when Dan Motl was hit by a pitch. Brady Shoemaker walked and that brought up one of the newest members of the Saints, John Salviano. He roped a two-run double to right-center giving the Saints a 2-1 lead.

Jess settled down after his first inning of relief and retired six of the final seven batters he faced going 2.1 shutout innings allowing two hits while striking out three.

Landon Beck took over in the sixth and despite giving up a leadoff walk, worked around a first and second out jam by striking out Tyler Moore and getting John Sansone to ground out to end the inning.

The Saints added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when Devon Rodriguez led off with a single to right-center. After Chesny Young sacrificed him over, Steve Pascual walked. Max Murhpy followed with an infield single to third loading the bases. Motl and Murphy followed with RBI singles making it 4-1.

Closer Todd Van Steensel finished off the night. He gave up a leadoff single to Daniel Herrera before striking out Marin. A passed ball moved up Herrera, but Van Steensel got Martinez to ground out. After a walk to Pfeffer, Van Steensel earned his 12th save by getting Randolph Oduber to ground out to short to end the game.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series on Wednesday night at 6:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Dustin Crenshaw (3-2, 4.37) to the mound against Saltdogs RHP Shairon Martis (1-3, 7.86). It is the Independence Day Celebration with Post-Game Monster Food Truck Rally and Fireworks Super Show. The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM and seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities area.
