Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
NORWICH, CT - A fast start by the Hudson Valley Renegades went by the wayside as the Connecticut Tigers scored eight unanswered runs in an 8-6 victory Friday night from Dodd Stadium.
The Renegades got on the board in the first inning as two singles and a walk loaded the bases with two out. Designated hitter Jordyn Muffley grounded to Tigers second-baseman Jose King who threw to second for a fielder's choice attempt. However, Hudson Valley catcher Jonathan Embry beat the play at second, which allowed the runner from third to score and give the Renegades the lead.
Hudson Valley added another run in the second as third-baseman Carlos Vargas lined a double to left, moved to third on a fly out, then scored on a two-out wild pitch from Connecticut starter Wes Noble to up the lead to two.
The visitors would then bust the game open by adding four more runs in the fourth; and it all started with two out and nobody on base. Singles from shortstop Luis Arcendo and centerfielder Beau Brundage put runners at the corners. Brundage stole second and the throw from Connecticut catcher Cooper Johnson sailed into centerfield to score Arcendo. After a walk, leftfielder Hill Alexander continued his torrid streak with a three-run homerun to left to give Hudson Valley a commanding 6-0 lead. It was Alexander's second homerun of the season and gave him 10 RBI over his last six games.
However, the Tigers would come crawling back as they started their rally with two runs in the bottom-of-the-fourth. First-baseman Jake Holton was hit with a pitch and leftfielder Bryant Packard lined a double to left to put runners at first and second with two away. Shortstop Corey Joyce stood in next and grounded a two-out, two-run single to center to make the score 6-2.
Connecticut added two more in the fifth to draw closer. Centerfielder Kingston Liniak started the inning with a line-drive solo-homer to left for his first dinger of the year. Another hit batter and single would follow to put runners at the corners with one out before Hudson Valley reliever Justin Montgomery uncorked a wild pitch to score the runner from third and bring the Tigers to within two.
The home team then took the lead by adding three more runs in the sixth. Back-to-back singles from third-baseman Alexis Garcia and King put runners at the corners. Liniak then drove a single to center to bring in Garcia and move King to second, which set the stage for a two-run double to right by Holton to put the Tigers on top 7-6.
Connecticut added an insurance run in the seventh as two singles and a walk loaded the bases before Hudson Valley reliever Jose Roca delivered another wild pitch to score the runner from third.
The teams combined for 21 hits with Hudson Valley collecting 10 of them. Alexander finished 3-4 with his homer, double, and three RBI with a run scored. Brundage, Vargas and second-baseman Cristhian Pedroza each added two hits with Vargas notching a double and run. Brundage scored twice and Pedroza once.
Five Tigers had two hits each. Liniak was 2-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored. Holton had a double, two RBI and a run. Packard finished with a double and run. Joyce was 2-4 with a run and two RBI, while King went 2-3 with a run as well.
Getting the win in relief for the Tigers was Raul De Los Reyes (1-0) who tossed two scoreless innings on two hits with a strikeout. The loss fell to Renegades relief man Jose Roca (2-1) after he allowed two runs on five hits over three innings. He also struck out five. The save went to Connecticut's Austin Anderson who fired a scoreless ninth on a hit with a strikeout, to garner his second save of the season.
Hudson Valley now heads to Connecticut where they will begin a three-game series with the Tigers tomorrow. First-pitch is scheduled for 7:05. Righty Edisson Gonzalez (0-1, 9.00 ERA) will pitch for the Renegades against fellow-righty Chavez Fernander (1-1, 1.86 ERA) of the Tigers.
