A Record Setting First Half for the Walleye
January 23, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Toledo Walleye News Release
Toledo, OH - Thirty-Five games into the sixth season of Toledo Walleye hockey has seen many highs including a handful of new records and accomplishments. The team will officially hit the midway point tonight against Kalamazoo, riding an eight game unbeaten in regulation streak.
Currently the team sits 20 games above .500 (Walleye record) with a record of 25-5-3-2. The 55 points through 35 games is not only a new Walleye high but also the best in Toledo ECHL history.
The 25 wins to this point is a new Walleye record, plus only five regulation losses not only is a Walleye record but also one for Toledo ECHL history.
"It's been a very good first half of the season," said Head Coach Derek Lalonde. "It is a credit to the guys to find ways to win in every type of situation. We will look to continue our success in the second half."
Away from home has been key to this season's Walleye with a record 16-2-1-0. The team had set a new Walleye record with a seven game road winning that was snapped on Saturday, January 17 at Greenville (4-3 overtime loss). The team came back to win Sunday in South Carolina and has a current nine game unbeaten in regulation streak (8-0-1) away from the Huntington Center. The nine game road unbeaten streak is both a Walleye and Toledo ECHL record.
"This team has been successful due to the players high compete level and work ethic," said Associate Head Coach Dan Watson. "They are a prepared group that wants to win every game. We are looking forward to a challenging second half of the season."
Goaltender Jeff Lerg currently has won five consecutive starts, which is two away from the Walleye record held by Alec Richards who won seven straight from December 9, 2009 through January 17, 2010. Lerg does hold a Walleye record with a twelve game unbeaten in regulation streak from October 26 through December 12, 2014. Anthony Luciani set a new Walleye best ten game point streak set October 18 through November 16, 2014.
Toledo has also set new Walleye records this season for the fewest shots allowed in a single game (14) against Evansville on November 18. The most goals scored over a five game span (33) set between November 22 and December 6. This year's team has also not allowed a shorthanded goal since October 26, a span of 32 games. On November 9, 2014, a new record was set by Toledo and Cincinnati going thirteen rounds in a 4-3 Walleye Shootout win.
Aside of the new records set; this team has tied the Walleye records for most goals scored in a game with nine on November 28 vs. Orlando. That game also tied the most combined goals scored (15). Right now, the Walleye ride an eight game unbeaten streak, which has tied the Walleye record. Toledo hit eight games unbeaten from November 2 through November 22. This team tied the mark with a four game home winning streak (November 8 - November 16) and also tied the Walleye record with not allowing a power play goal in five consecutive games from October 18 through November 4.
