'A Big, Big Help': Inaugural Horseshoe Tournament Raises Money for Warriors Education Fund
October 5, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
A new tradition started at Friday's home opener.
The inaugural Warriors Horseshoe Tournament was held just outside Mosaic Place, all in name of raising funds for the Moose Jaw Warriors Education Fund.
"We've had the golf tournament, which is an all men's golf tournament, and we've thought we better involve some of the ladies," Todd Hudson, chair of the Warriors' tournament committee.
Wayne Magee and Marv Guillaume came away with the title in the inaugural tournament, which was held ahead of Friday's home opener for the Warriors.
Hudson called this year's tournament a 'learning process' and said the plan is to make the tournament bigger heading into next year.
"It will be a huge success next year, we're going to double the size and make it an all-day event, have an 'A' and 'B' side, it will be good," Hudson said.
The inaugural event kicked off the day of the home opener and helped build excitement for the season opener against the Saskatoon Blades across the street at Mosaic Place.
Hudson said the event was put together in about a month after initially being planned for last year, but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We kind of flew by the seat of our pants a little bit," he said.
"Moose Jaw is just a tremendous community, it doesn't matter what event you have in Moose Jaw, the business crew in this town is unbelievable and I'm just glad to be a part of the City of Moose Jaw."
All the funds raised through the tournament go to the Warriors Education Fund, which continued to support graduate players through the COVID-19 pandemic.
"After no fans last year, it's a big deal," Hudson said. "Those kids still went to school and still had tuition, so they missed a year out of the golf tournament, or a fundraiser, and this will be a big, big help."
The Warriors contribute more than $100,000 annually to graduate players attending post-secondary institutions. The Education Fund has raised close to $1-million in support of the team's alumni.
A final total will be announced at a later date.
The Warriors return to the ice on Friday night for their first meeting of the regular season against the Regina Pats. The Rivalry Package is available now, featuring all five games against the Pats at Mosaic Place.
