Hickory Crawdads News Release
The Hickory Crawdads ran their winning streak to a season high four games scoring a run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and another with two gone in the last of the eleventh in a 7-6 win over Hagerstown in front of 1,499 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium Tuesday night.
The Crawdads reached for a run in the ninth when catcher Steve Lerud led off the inning with a walk against reliever Ryan Marte. With two outs Lerud moved to third on SS Brent Lillibridge's single to right field. On a two-two count, DH James Boone singled home Lerud to tie the game at six.
Hagerstown rallied to load the bases against Hickory reliever Justin Vaclavik in the top of the eleventh. Suns CF Joe Holden singled off of Vaclavik's right arm to put runners on each base. Vaclavik left due to the injury to his arm, and Matt Swanson came in. On the first pitch Swanson threw to 2B Hector Pellot, he got a ground ball back to the mound. Swanson tossed home for one out. Lerud's relay to first base ended the inning.
Suns reliever Josh Appell got two quick outs in the bottom of the eleventh before Lillibridge drew a walk. Boone singled to put runners on the corners. Hickory CF Andrew McCutchen followed with a single through the box to score Lillibridge and give the Crawdads a 7-6 win.
The victory for Hickory was its second in walk-off fashion this season. It was the Crawdads first extra inning victory after falling in their first seven tries. Hickory won its first game in 16 attempts when trailing after eight innings.
Hickory led the game early 4-0 and 5-1. Hagerstown got four runs in the seventh inning to tie the score at five. The Suns pushed across the go ahead run in the eighth on an RBI single from 3B Mike Anderson scoring LF Jonel Pacheco.
Swanson (2-2) threw just one pitch and got two outs to earn the win. Appell (0-4) took the loss allowing one run in two-thirds of an inning. Hagerstown dropped its eighth straight.
The âDads travel to Lakewood, NJ next. Hickory battles the BlueClaws in a four game series that starts Thursday night at 7pm.
