Captains fall to Grasshoppers, 2-1, in extras

(Greensboro, NC)--Second baseman Gary Roche slapped an RBI single to center in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday afternoon, handing the Greensboro Grasshoppers a 2-1 win over the Lake County Captains.

Roche, who went 1-5 in the game, drove in Jared Gaston from third base with the winning run. Gaston was hit by Dustin Roddy (2-1) to lead off the 10th, and moved to third on a fielding error by Chris De La Cruz.

The Captains tied the game 1-1 in the ninth on a solo homer by Matt Fornasiere off lefty Wes Letson (2-0). It was Fornasiere's second homer of the season.

Greensboro (28-23) took a 1-0 lead in the third on an unearned run against Captains starter Carlton Smith. Smith worked six innings, giving up two hits, with no walks and five strikeouts.

Grasshoppers starter Sean West was equally impressive, going the first seven innings and holding the Captains scoreless.

The Captains (24-28) split the four game series with the Grasshoppers.

After n off-day Wednesday, the Captains will begin a four-game series against the West Virginia Power on Thursday night at 7:05 at Classic Park. For tickets, call 440-954-WINS.
