HarbourCats Sign Pitcher Delgado
July 1, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release
The Victoria HarbourCats are pleased to announce the signing of RHP Angel Delgado, who pitched for Riverside City College and former HarbourCats Head Coach Dennis Rogers this past season.
Delgado is a 6-1/165 pitcher from Beaumont, California. He is fully recovered from an injury that limited him to just two starts and 11 innings this past season. He was 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA for the Tigers, and has arrived in Victoria. Delgado and HarbourCats lefty Don Sullivan were teammates at RCC in the spring.
"Angel provides us additional depth in the bullpen and he is glad to be in Victoria," said General Manager Jim Swanson. "He arrived in time for Monday's big home win over Kitsap, and the fireworks, and got a real sense of how much this city supports the HarbourCats."
There are two notable injuries to mention -- the first is head coach Bob Miller, who took a ball off the right hand in practice and will have surgery to repair the damage. Catcher Kelly Norris-Jones is dealing with a strained thumb, a soft-tissue injury, and will rest his left/catching hand until he is 100 per cent.
"Bob's injury is one of the accidents that can happen but rarely do during batting practice, while with Kelly, we know he wants to play badly so we have to hold him back so he can catch and hit the way we all know he can," said Swanson. "No one wants to contribute more than Kelly, he is the consummate competitor and teammate. He'll be fine, we're just being patient so there are no other setbacks. We need him down the stretch, and he's a key player for Illinois this coming school year."
The HarbourCats are home Tuesday afternoon (1pm) to the Kitsap BlueJackets, the second game of a three-game set at Sports Traders Diamond. The HarbourCats are on a two-game streak after winning 4-3 in dramatic fashion on Monday night prior to the 16-minute fireworks show.
On Wednesday, the HarbourCats and Greater Victoria Baseball Association welcome the Honda Blue Jays Super Camp, with former Blue Jays greats Roberto Alomar, Devon White, Duane Ward, Lloyd Moseby, Jesse Barfield, Brian McRae and Sandy Alomar Sr. The camp is open for public viewing, 9am-1pm on Wednesday and Thursday. One of those greats will be throwing out the first pitch for Wednesday's HarbourCats/BlueJackets season finale, a 7:11pm start.
