Watkins Starts Fireworks in HarbourCats Win

July 1, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release

Sean Watkins knows how to light a fuse -- under his team, and under a crowd of nearly 3,000 at Sports Traders Diamond.

The recent graduate of Serra High School, who will attend Loyola Marymount University in the fall, was as close to a one-man show as there can be in baseball on Monday as the Victoria HarbourCats defeated the West Division-rival Kitsap BlueJackets 4-3.

Watkins started the game as the designated hitter, then came on to pitch and struck out the side in the eighth inning. In the bottom of the eighth, he crushed a solo home run to left field to break a 3-3 deadlock.

Then, ho hum, he struck out three of four batters faced in the ninth to essentially save a game he won on his own -- with his arm, and with his bat.

The HarbourCats have now won two straight after a nine-game losing streak, improving to 7-12. Kitsap fell to 8-10, suffering a sixth-straight defeat. The HarbourCats are 6.5 games back of the West Division-leading Bellingham Bells, who won again Monday to improve to 13-5.

In front of an announced crowd of 2,812 on Fireworks Night, Logan Lombana had a strong start for the HarbourCats on Monday, working six innings and surrendering nine hits. He fanned four and walked two, and the three runs he gave up were earned. Sam Sheldon was the losing pitcher.

The HarbourCats banged out seven hits, two fewer than Kitsap. The BlueJackets made five errors. A key was the HarbourCats did not lead the strikeout parade in this game -- 10 by Kitsap batters, only six whiffs by HarbourCats hitters.

Catcher Aaron Barnett was 2-4 for the HarbourCats and threw out a pair of baserunners.
