Former HarbourCats C Alex Real Signs with Twins
June 23, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release
Alex Real, the catcher from the University of New Mexico who was a star player for the inaugural edition of the Victoria HarbourCats, has signed a professional contract with the Minnesota Twins.
Real, who hit .339 with six home runs and 27 RBIs in 2013 for Victoria, was a 24th round selection by the Twins in the recent MLB draft. Terms of his deal were not disclosed.
"Alex was a player you couldn't take your eyes off last year, and you could see very quickly that he projected as a pro player," said HarbourCats owner John McLean. "With Alex and Nick Pivetta, who is from Victoria and was our opening day starter last year, now both in professional baseball, it shows what level of the game is being played in Victoria and around the West Coast League. We couldn't be happier for Alex, we hope he finds the fast track to Major League Baseball, and one day we'd like to see him digging in against Nick in a big-league game."
A total of 61 current or former WCL players were selected earlier this month in the MLB draft. The HarbourCats roster includes players who are past MLB draft choices -- Kelly Norris-Jones, Hunter Mercado-Hood, Alan Baldwin, and Bryce Greager.
The HarbourCats are home tonight to the Bend Elks, 7:11pm at Sports Traders Diamond at Royal Athletic Park. Tickets are available at www.harbourcats.com/tickets.
