67's Resilient in Road Win in Oshawa

January 31, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Ottawa 67's News Release

A resilient road effort in Oshawa saw the 67's close out the month of January on a high note Sunday evening with a 5-4 shootout win over the Generals in a penalty-filled affair. Goaltender Leo Lazarev made 34 saves while Connor Warnholtz scored the decisive goal in the shootout earning Ottawa their seventh win in their last 11 games (7-3-0-1).

In the opening frame it was the 67's who struck first thanks to Adam Craievich's second goal of the season coming on the powerplay. Minutes later, the Barberpoles got into penalty trouble that saw the Generals have a full two-minute 5-on-3 powerplay. Lazarev and the penalty killers kept the Generals at bay and seconds after the 67's returned to even-strength, Dante Salituro put home his 29th of the season on a great feed from Jeremiah Addison to put Ottawa up 2-0 halfway through the period. With less than two minutes remaining, Salituro picked up a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for slashing, sending the Generals to a lengthy powerplay. Oshawa would cut the deficit in half before the period ended with the 67's remaining in front thanks to 19 saves from Lazarev. The two teams combined for 25 penalty minutes in the opening 20-minutes.

The penalties continued in the second period and the Generals would even the score 2-2 on a powerplay goal less than five minutes into the period. Four minutes later the Generals took their first lead of the game. The Barberpoles responded less than two minutes later on Ben Fanjoy's 15th goal of the season. The seesaw battle continued and three minutes later Oshawa regained the lead carrying a 4-3 lead into the third period.

The Barberpoles generated plenty of momentum as the third period wore on, but despite powerplay opportunities and several scoring chances Generals goaltender Justin Nichols stood tall. Continuing to push for the equalizer, Jeremiah Addison found an equalizer with less than four minutes remaining with a bullet of a shot over Nichols to force overtime.

In the overtime, Leo Lazarev came up with some big saves and there were plenty of scoring chances for the Barberpoles, but neither team was able to find the back of the net, forcing a shootout.

It took 8 rounds and 16 shooters in the shootout, but with great saves by Lazarev and goals by Fanjoy, Tyanulin and Warnholtz, the 67's earned two big points on the road.

The 67's return to action Friday night at the Arena at TD Place against the Hamilton Bulldogs at 7 p.m.
