Saginaw Spirit News Release
SAGINAW, MI - The Saginaw Spirit wrapped up their three-game weekend on Sunday afternoon against the Guelph Storm. The Storm scored back-to-back goals in the second period en route to a 4-2 victory over the Saginaw Spirit.
An ill-timed penalty in the first period proved costly for the Saginaw Spirit. Just as the Spirit finished up a power play opportunity of their own, Saginaw's Matt Kreis was whistled for tripping. On the ensuing Storm power play, C.J. Garcia found the back of the net to open the game's scoring and give Guelph a 1-0 lead at 6:57 of the first period. Despite two more power play opportunities in the period, the Spirit were unable to beat Guelph's defense and netminder Michael Giugovaz. Shots in the second period were tied at nine apiece.
Early back-to-back goals for Guelph pushed the Storm out in front in the second period. At 1:25, James McEwan cushioned Guelph's lead with help from Levi Tetrault. Just 14 seconds later, Liam Stevens notched a comfortable 3-0 lead for the Storm. Despite the deficit, Saginaw's Artem Artemov put the Spirit on the board and notched his 16th goal of the season. The Spirit carried play throughout the second period, outshooting the Storm 16-4.
A majority of the third period was scoreless and held the Guelph Storm with a 3-1 lead over the Spirit. The Spirit tried to make one last offensive push in the final moments of the contest, but the Storm snuck in an empty net goal to go up 4-1 over the Spirit. With less than a minute to go in the final period, the Storm were whistled for too many men and sent the Spirit to the power play. Saginaw's Tye Felhaber scored with nine seconds left to slice the Storm's lead in half. Despite the Spirit outshooting the Storm 44-20, Guelph defeated the Saginaw by a score of 4-2.
