Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Base-running blunders and missed opportunities wiped away any chance of a Rancho victory, as the Quakes ran themselves out of Monday night's contest, losing to the visiting Inland Empire 66ers, 4-3.
With the Quakes down 4-2 with one out in the seventh, Bladimir Franco laced a double to the gap in right that plated Webster Rivas from first. The run would not count however, as Scott Wingo, the Quakes' on-deck batter, was called out for interference for making contact with catcher Abel Baker. The call nullified the run and Rivas was subsequently called out. Rancho would not score in the inning.
Four more Quakes were thrown out on the basepaths -- two picked off, two caught stealing -- and Rancho struggled to find a rhythm.
Down 4-3 with one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Quakes failed to push across the tying run, as Casio Grider and Devin Shines popped out to end the game, leaving the bases loaded.
Gary Mitchell's three-run home run capped off a four-run fourth inning that proved to be all the 66ers would need to down the Quakes. The home run was Mitchell's first of the season.
Scott Schebler enjoyed a 2-for-4 night, extending his season-long hit streak to 17 games with a triple -- his eighth of the season -- and a bunt single.
Schebler's first-inning triple cashed in Carl Crawford, who played in his second rehab game with the Quakes in as many days. Schebler later came home on Darnell Sweeney's single to make it 2-0.
Crawford finished the night 1-for-3 with a run scored, bringing him to 3-for-6 over the two days. The Dodgers star left fielder is expected to play two more rehab games before returning to the big league club.
Garrett Gould (L, 2-7) took the loss, surrendering four earned runs on four hits and three walks over four innings. Danny Reynolds (W, 7-7) earned his second win of the season against the Quakes after striking out six and allowing two runs over 6 1/3 innings.
R.J. Alvarez allowed a run in the ninth inning, but earned his second save of the season.
The loss drops the Quakes to 2-10 in the second half of the season, as they drop the first game of a three-game series against Inland Empire. Angel Sanchez (0-1, 3.50 ERA) gets the call for the Quakes on Tuesday and Jake Boyd (0-1, 6.61 ERA) takes the mound for Inland Empire.
