Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Grenny Cumana tied the game with a three-run homer in the top of the eighth before Clearwater went on to win, 5-4, against the Daytona Tortugas Wednesday morning at The Jack in front of 2,484 fans.
For the sixth game in a row, the Tortugas opponent scored first. Luke Williams led off the top of the fifth inning with a single against RHP Tejay Antone, and moved to second on a balk. A Raul Rivas single moved Williams to third, and he would come in to score on an Arquimedes Gamboa sacrifice fly to center.
The Tortugas would tie the game at one in the bottom of the sixth. Taylor Trammell led the inning off with a bunt single, then moved to second following a Randy Ventura single to left. Both men advanced 90 feet on a balk from RHP Alejandro Requena. Ibandel Isabel then notched Daytona's first win with a sacrifice fly to the warning track.
In the bottom of the seventh, Daytona took their first lead. Michael Beltre and Stuart Fairchild both walked to start the inning against RHP Blake Quinn. Brantley Bell then drove in Beltre from third with a single to give the Tortugas a 2-1 lead. The Tortugas would score two more runs on back-to-back two-out singles from Trammell and Ventura to go up 4-1.
However, Clearwater answered with a big top of the eighth against RHP Aaron Fossas. After retiring the first two men he faced, Fossas then allowed a two-out single to Kyle Martin and a walk to Williams to bring the tying run to the plate. With two away, the 5'5'' Grenny Cumana drilled a three-run homer to left field to tie the game at four.
The Threshers would score the winning-run in the top of the ninth. Gamboa led off the inning by reaching on a dropped third strike from LHP Juan Martinez. He moved up to second on a walk, and to third on a double play ground out. The Tortugas elected to intentionally walk Jose Pujols to put runners on the corners, and set up a lefty vs. lefty matchup between Martinez and Mickey Moniak. Moniak came through with a bunt single up the third base line to score Gamboa and give Clearwater the eventual, 5-4, win.
RHP Addison Russ (2-0) earned the win in relief after pitching a perfect bottom of the eighth and ninth. Martinez (0-1) was handed the loss, allowing a hit, a run, two walks, and a strikeout in the top of the ninth.
The Tortugas will look to avoid the sweep Thursday night when they send LHP Wennington Romero (6-4, 3.93 ERA) to the hill against LHP Bailey Falter (5-2, 2.96 ERA). It will be the third meeting of the season between the two southpaws, with each recording victories in their own ballpark in the past.
First pitch Thursday is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:45 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
