Threshers Rally Again to Win 6th Straight

Grenny Cumana's three-run home run tied the ballgame in the eighth inning, and the Clearwater Threshers completed the comeback to earn their sixth consecutive win, 5-4 over the Daytona Tortugas on Wednesday morning.

Clearwater (6-0) (38-36) plated four runs over the final two innings to take the series. Alejandro Requena worked six strong innings, holding the Tortugas to one run on five hits in his first start since April 14.

The Threshers broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning, after Luke Williams led off with a single to center, and Raul Rivas singled with one out to put runners at the corners. Arquimedes Gamboa followed with a sacrifice fly, plating Williams to make it 1-0.

Daytona (3-3) (40-32) tied it in the sixth, when Ibandel Isabel's sacrifice fly scored Taylor Trammel to knot the game up at one. The Tortguas then took the lead an inning later, putting up three runs off reliever Blake Quinn.

Down 4-1 in the eighth, Kyle Martin got a two-out rally going with a single to left. Williams worked a walk, and Cumana delivered the big blow by turning on a 1-2 pitch and homering to left field to tie the game at four apiece on his second long ball of the season.

Clearwater took the lead in the ninth off reliever Juan Martinez (0-1). Gamboa struck out but reached on a wild pitch, and Adam Haseley drew a walk. Edgar Cabral grounded into a double play, which advanced Gamboa to third with two outs, and Jose Pujols was intentionally walked.

Mickey Moniak came through with a bunt single toward third, scoring Gamboa to push Clearwater ahead, 5-4.

Addison Russ (2-0) earned the victory after tossing the final two innings in relief, holding Daytona hitless.

Clearwater will go for the sweep on Thursday, when Bailey Falter takes the hill against Wennington Romero at 7:05 p.m.
