Brampton Steelheads News Release

It's that time of the year in the NHL, where teams open their developmental camps giving prospects an opportunity to show off their skills in hopes of taking the next step in their hockey careers.

Among the many players across North America looking to impress NHL coaching staffs, there are four players from the Mississauga Steelheads. Defenceman Stefan LeBlanc has been participating in the Ottawa Senators developmental camp; defenceman Nick Zottl received an invite to take part in the Detroit Red Wings developmental camp, right winger Andrew Goldberg was invited to work out for the Vancouver Canucks at their developmental camp and left winger Damian Bourne received an invite to participate with the Calgary Flames in their developmental camp. Each player received an invite as an undrafted free agent.

LeBlanc was acquired by the Steelheads in his rookie season at the OHL trade deadline from Sudbury this past season in the deal that sent Trevor Carrick and Bradley Bell to Sudbury. In 26 regular season games as a member of the Steelheads LeBlanc contributed immediately to the team as he recorded 2 goals and 10 assists. His combined regular season totals of 5 goals and 23 assists in 64 regular season games put him fourth in overall team scoring and first among defencemen. LeBlanc was also second amongst Steelheads in playoff scoring.

Stefan was one of the 34 prospects that received an invitation to travel to Ottawa to participate in the Senators' developmental camp. He was one of 11 defencemen that made the trip to the nation's capital and was a part of a prospect group that included all five of Ottawa's 2014 draft picks, as well as players who have spent time on the Senators AHL affiliate the Binghamton Senators, some of which also saw time in the NHL.

The camp began on Canada Day July 1st and ended on July 7th. It was led by Senators assistant general manager Randy Lee and members of the Senators' coaching staff including assistant coach and former Mississauga head coach Dave Cameron.

After being drafted by Mississauga in 2011, the 2013-2014 OHL season was the first full campaign of Nick Zottl's career. The defensive stalwart contributed 15 points to the Steelheads offense in his rookie season and appeared in all of the Steelheads' 2014 playoff games.

Nick is one of 14 defencemen and 43 players to be invited to Detroit to participate in the Red Wings developmental camp. At 6'5 220 lbs Nick enters the camp as one of the bigger defencemen invited. For the Red Wings their developmental camp can be a big stepping stone for prospects as 13 players from their past 3 camps have made their NHL debut with Detroit over the past 2 seasons.

The camp kicked off on the 4th of July in Detroit and will be ended yesterday, July 8th. The camp was organized by Jiri Fischer, the team's director of player development while the practices were run by coaches of the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit's AHL affiliate. Also watching closely over the five day camp were Red Wings general manager Ken Holland and head coach Mike Babcock.

Andrew Goldberg enjoyed a breakout season in 2013-2014, where he set career highs in goals (17), assists (16) and total points (33). The Steelheads' leading regular-season goal scorer also contributed two points in four playoff games.

Andrew was one of the 35 players in attendance at the University of British Columbia on Monday July 7th ready to take part in the Canucks developmental camp. Of the 17 forwards at camp he is one of four right wingers that received an invitation.

Damian Bourne enjoyed a second season that saw increases in career highs for both goals and points. Damian stepped into the role of power forward very well despite playing 49 games in the regular season; Damian also played in all four of the Steelheads' first round playoff games, picking up an assist.

He was one of the 41 prospects, and 24 forwards that were invited to Calgary to participate in the Flames' developmental camp. Standing at 6'4, 209 pounds, Bourne is a big, physical, "truculent" forward coveted by Calgary's President of Hockey Operations, Brian Burke.

The Flames developmental camp ran between July 4th and 9th to not only improve on the team's development of prospects, but to also familiarize them with how the team operates.
