3-2 win over Wisconsin clinches wild-card spot

August 27, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels punched their ticket for the post-season with a 3-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Ratters at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI. The win puts the Kernels five games ahead of third place Beloit with five games to play in the season as they kept 3.5 games behind first place Burlington.
Jeremy Moore led off the game with a solo home run and Julio Perez added a solo shot in the sixth to lead the Kernels offense and Robert Fish (10-4) allowed a run on three hits and struck out eight over six innings for the win. Eddie McKiernan pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and retired the side in order in the ninth for his 21st save of the season.
The Kernels had four hits as Tyler Johnson and Alberto Rosario each had a single and Johnson scored the Kernels third run as there was a throwing error on Rosario's single, which allowed him to score from first.
Wisconsin starter Michael Pineda (7-6) allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and struck out six over 6.2 innings in taking the loss. Joe Dunigan had a solo home run and Denny Almonte hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth for the Timber Rattlers runs.
The Kernels will most likely host Clinton in the first round of the MWL playoffs on Wednesday, September 3rd at 6:30 pm at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Playoff tickets are currently on sale via the internet at www.kernels.com The final home series of the regular season starts Friday, August 29 when the Kernels host Clinton at 7 pm.
