The first half started with the 'Caps pushing for early opportunities, as Ryan Gauld's pass from the right side of the field following a counter attack found Lucas Cavallini inside the box. However, the Canadian's strike from close range was held off just inside the first minute of the match.
The 'Caps would open the scoring in the 19th minute. Following a corner kick, Ryan Gauld played the ball in from the right flank of the field, with the ball finding its way to forward Brian White, who headed in his third goal of the tournament to make it 1-0.
Toronto FC would look to build momentum in possession, but the 'Caps compact defending fended off every opportunity.
As the first half neared its end, an Andrés Cubas' cross connected to Ryan Raposo, who's volleyed strike inside the area rolled just past the net right before the whistle blew.
The second half began as the away side hunted for more opportunities inside their final third, with Jayden Nelson's curled shot missing the target just wide in the 49th minute. With the Reds looking on to convert from their chances as the match progressed, a right footed strike from Lorenzo Insigne in the 60th minute of the match was parried away by goalkeeper Cody Cropper.
However, Toronto would find an equalizer. Following a corner, a short pass placed by Nelson connected to Federico Bernardeschi, who's curled cross found Lukas MacNaughton inside the area, with the defender heading in the equalizer in the 75th minute to make it 1-1.
It was nearly a win in regulation for the 'Caps in the 80th minute of the match. A counter attack was organized by Cubas, who's long through pass sprung White inside the final third. As the play progressed, White sent in a short pass to substitute Tosaint Ricketts, who's strike was strongly saved by Alex Bono, sending the match to a shootout.
With 24,307 fans rocking, the 'Caps would hit all five of their shots in the shootout, with only Toronto's Jonathan Osorio hitting the post. Defender Tristan Blackmon would then score the shootout winner to give the 'Caps their second Voyageurs Cup in club history.
