Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers have acquired defender Juan David Mosquera from Categoría Primera A side Independiente Medellín, the club announced today. Under contract through 2026 with a club option for 2027, Mosquera will occupy an international and a U22 Initiative Slot. The Colombian international will be added to the Timbers' roster, pending a physical and receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 visa.
"Juan David is a talented player who at a young age has showcased his abilities at the club level as well as in important tournaments such as Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana," said Gavin Wilkinson, Timbers general manager and president of soccer. "For a young player, he has already amassed a good number of professional games at a high level, and we believe has all the attributes to be a great addition to the team. We are excited to welcome him and continue his development."
Mosquera, 19, joins the Timbers after spending three seasons at Independiente Medellín in Colombia. The Cali, Colombia native registered three goals and three assists in 59 appearances across all competitions. He made his professional debut at 17 years old on Feb. 7, 2020, against Patriotas Boyaca, logging a 90-minute performance.
"We're excited to welcome Juan David to Portland. We believe he will give us depth and strength, while we also will provide him with the right environment to develop as a player and as a person," said Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese. "His talent and skillset will make us a more competitive team. We've incorporated and trusted young, talented players into our team and we have seen their growth. These young players have adapted themselves in a very positive way, so I'm looking forward to work with Juan David as he develops with us at the Timbers."
In the CONMEBOL region, he has featured in Copa Colombia, Copa Sudamericana and Copa Libertadores tournaments. Most recently in 2022, the defender started in seven of eight appearances, including five 90-minute performances, for Independiente Medellín in Copa Sudamericana. Additionally, this year, Mosquera started in a 2-1 win against Tigres FC in Copa Colombia on May 5. As a youth international, Mosquera appeared with the Colombia U-17 Men's National Team at the 2019 South American U-17 Championship in Lima, Peru and has also been named to the roster of Colombia's U-20 training camps.
Transaction: Portland Timbers sign defender Juan David Mosquera through the 2026 season with a club option for 2027. Mosquera will occupy an international and a U22 Initiative Slot, pending a physical and receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 visa.
