Brampton Steelheads News Release
Three players from the Steelheads were selected in the 2019 NHL Draft. Only one other team in the OHL had three players drafted in Vancouver this year. This was the second highest draft class for the Steelheads next to 2016 when six players were taken.
Thomas Harley
Thomas Harley became the sixth Steelhead to be drafted to the NHL in the first round and the first to be drafted by the Dallas Stars. Harley was also the first OHL player to be taken in the 2019 NHL Draft. Click here to hear from Thomas Harley on getting selected 18th overall.
Cole Schwindt
Cole Schwindt was the second Steelhead taken in the draft. Owning three 4th round picks entering the day, the Florida Panthers made a draft-day trade on Saturday to move up in the 3rd round. Florida sent two 4th round selections (104th and 114th) to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the 81st overall pick. The Panthers went on to select forward Cole Schwindt.
Keean Washkurak
Keean Washkurak was the third Steelheads player taken in the draft. Washkurak also became the first player from the Mississauga Steelheads Hockey Club to be drafted by the St. Louis Blues. He was voted as the Eastern Conference's Hardest Worker in the 2018-19 OHL Coaches Poll and improved his offensive output from his freshman year, leading to the selection by the reigning Stanley Cup Champions.
Notable Mentions:
Three other Steelheads draft picks were selected in the first round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Jack Hughes was taken first overall by the New Jersey Devils, Trevor Zegras was selected ninth overall by the Anaheim Ducks and Robert Mastrosimone was drafted in the second round (54th overall) by the Detroit Red Wings.
