MONTGOMERY, AL - The Biloxi Shuckers stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Montgomery Biscuits 5-2 after 16 strikeouts from the pitching staff and five unanswered runs from the lineup in the series opener at Riverwalk Stadium. With the win, the Shuckers improved to 13-9, tying their high-water mark of four games above 500.

The Biscuits struck first in the series with a solo home run from Ronny Simon to lead off the game and another solo shot from Austin Shenton in the first inning. From there, Shuckers' starter Brandon Knarr retired the final four batters of his outing before turning over the ball to Christian Mejias.

In his second relief outing of the year, Mejias (2-1) retired 15 of the 19 batters he faced and tied his season-high with eight strikeouts to earn the win.

With Mejias holding the Biscuit bats at bay, the Shuckers offense started in the fifth when an error allowed Ethan Murray to scamper home to cut the deficit to 2-1. In the seventh, a solo blast from Tyler Black to right tied the game at two. The blast, emphasized by a massive bat flip, was Black's fifth of the year, tying him for the league lead with five home runs.

The Shuckers then took the lead on an RBI single from Carlos Rodriguez. The single was part of a multi-hit night from Rodriguez, who extended his on-base streak to 16 consecutive games, the longest by a Shuckers player in 2023.

Robbie Baker entered the game in the bottom of the eighth for Biloxi and retired the side in order, helped by an outfield assist from Joe Gray Jr., who made his Double-A debut.

Zavier Warren then added to the lead with a two-out two-run single in the ninth to score Jackson Chourio and Tyler Black. Both utilized stolen bases to move up, including a double steal to give the Shuckers their fourth and fifth stolen bases on the night.

With the lead at 5-3, Cam Robinson entered the game for his first Double-A appearance of the year, and struck out the side to earn the save. Justin Sterner (0-1) took the loss.

The teams are set to meet tomorrow for game two of the series. Carlos Rodriguez (0-1, 2.12) will make his fifth start of the year against Sean Hunley (1-1, 1.00). First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
