Fort Worth Flyers News Release
The Fort Worth Flyers endured a tough home loss tonight, falling to the Colorado 14ers, 112-97.
Head coach Sidney Moncrief said the team didn't battle enough or take advantage of being at home.
In the first quarter, the teams traded baskets, and the score was tied at 16 with 6:00 minutes remaining. From there, the 14ers built a lead that peaked at 11. The Flyers narrowed the lead at the buzzer, but Colorado still led 32-23.
With a little more than 9:00 minutes left in the second quarter, Fort Worth unearthed a second wind igniting a 13-0 run which ended at 41-37 in their favor. The run was anchored by forwards Terrance Thomas and Chris Copeland and center Luke Schenscher. Despite the accomplishment, the Flyers' opponent responded and regained the advantage. Colorado tied the game at 41 with 5:32 minutes to go, and went on a run of its own; the half ended 59-47.
"It was a good little stretch," said Moncrief about Fort Worth's run. "The lineups were good at that point in time."
Moncrief said Colorado's offensive rebounds and the Flyers' turnovers contributed to the 14ers comeback.
"If we had just continued to build momentum, the second half would have been a little bit simpler for us," he said.
Colorado flirted with a double-digit lead almost the entire third period. The team added more of a cushion with an advantage that peaked at 87-69 with 33.0 remaining. Forward Ndubi Ebi scored a quick field goal and the quarter ended 87-71.
In the fourth quarter, the Flyers whittled the deficit to 10 points on two occasions, but couldn't overcome their opponent. Colorado won the game despite Fort Worth's efforts.
"It was a toughness issue," Moncrief said. "They wanted the ball more than we wanted it - and they got it - and were able to convert for buckets."
For the Flyers, Schenscher notched a double-double with 16 points and 13 boards. Copeland led the team with 23 points, plus nine rebounds and one steal. Thomas added 18 points and four each of rebounds and assists.
Guard, Tony Bobbit led Colorado with 23 points and added a steal. Forward, Louis Amundson had 19 points, 14 boards and five blocks and forward Mike Harris added 18 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks.
"Our defense was not good." Moncrief said. "They were tougher than we were inside, and got a lot of offensive rebounds."
The Flyers drop to 19-14 and the 14ers improve to 23-14. Colorado will now travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. to take on the Skyforce on Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Arena.
The Flyers return to the convention center this Sunday to battle the Tulsa 66ers. The matinee game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
