Fort Worth Flyers News Release
FORT WORTH, Texas - The Fort Worth Flyers capped their 2006-2007 season with an impressive 116-99 victory, downing their future playoff opponent, the Sioux Falls Skyforce tonight at the convention center. Seven Flyers finished with double figures, including center Deji Akindele, who had 10 each of points and rebounds, and guard Terrance Thomas, who had 17 points and 10 boards.
Head coach Sidney Moncrief said it was nice to end the season on a good note.
"We had good fan support tonight - it was very important as a team to go out playing the way we played tonight," he said. "We're capable of putting together this type of basketball."
In the first quarter, the Flyers remained a step behind Sioux Falls. The Skyforce held an advantage as large as seven points, and led 23-18 at the end of the period.
The Skyforce lead bounced between one and six points throughout a better chunk of the second quarter. However, the back-and-forth play between the teams caused five lead changes in the final 5:37. Also during that span, Thomas exploded for 11 of his 17 total points, helping the Flyers to a 55-51 halftime advantage.
In the third period, the Flyers achieved a double-digit lead, 67-56 at 7:52 after a three-pointer by Thomas. Thereafter, Fort Worth never relinquished a ten-point advantage, and was up 85-70 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Flyers remained on top until the end of the game, as Sioux Falls only came as close as 88-77 with 9:18 remaining.
Moncrief said the team's defense and energy level were on par tonight.
"It was more important to play well than to win," he said. "We wanted to at least have some momentum and have some confidence and I thought that our execution defensively was probably as well as we have executed in a long time."
Forward Chris Copeland led his team with 21 points, and added eight boards and an assist. Forward Anthony Terrell notched 12 points and four rebounds, and guard Kevin Burleson had 14 points and eight boards.
Moncrief praised Copeland for his performance, especially his rebounds. He said all players contributed well with boards, and that he was happy to see Sioux Falls converting less on its offensive rebounding.
The Flyers finish their season 29-21 and the Skyforce finish 30-20. The two rivals will play each other again on Tuesday in Sioux Falls in the first round of the playoffs. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Sioux Falls Arena. The winner of that game will face the Dakota Wizards at the Bismark Civic Center on April 21.
