AUSTIN, Texas - Renaldo Major scored 26 points as the Dakota Wizards defeated the Austin Toros 111-92 on Saturday night at the Austin Convention Center. Dakota won for the second time in two nights against the Toros to improve to 33-17.
Dakota, who clinched the best record in the Eastern Division in last night victory against the Toros, will play the winner of the Sioux Falls-Fort Worth match-up on Saturday, April 21 in Bismarck.
The Toros struggled to contain the Wizards in the first quarter after jumping out to an early 19-10 lead following Jamar Smith's layup. Despite getting off to a quick start against the best team in the Eastern Division, the Toros couldn't keep the advantage for very long as the Wizards would end the first period on a 22-7 run.
Major was a big part of the Dakota offensive attack for the rest of the first half, scoring 19 of his team high 26 points in the first half of play and helped Dakota lead 60-49 at halftime.
Austin would manage to tie the game at 73-73 following Brock Gillespie's 3-point basket with 2:54 to play in the third quarter but it was the closest that Austin would get for the remainder of the game. Darius Rice's 3-point basket with less than five seconds in the period pushed the Wizards lead to 83-75 and helped Dakota close the quarter on a 10-3 run.
The Wizards built as much as a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter and didn't let the Toros back into the game. With the loss to Dakota, Austin ended the season with the record of 21-29.
Jamar Smith led the Toros in scoring with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Cheyne Gadson shot 7-of-15 from the field and scored 20 points to go along with four assists. Other Toros players in scoring double figures included Justin Bowen (16 points) and Brock Gillespie (10).
