11-Run Fifth Sends Dillas Past WhiteWings

Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Dillas (25-14) scored 11 runs in the fifth to run away with a 17-7 win over the Harlingen WhiteWings (14-26) tonight at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.

The Dillas sent 15 men to the plate in the fifth. The first ten scored and the first out wasn't recorded until the 12th man hit. In all, 11 runs (nine earned) scored on seven hits, two walks, a hit batsman, and two errors. The first seven runs (six earned) were charged to Alex Gett (1-6), while the remaining four (three earned) were charged to Derek Bennett. When it was all done, the Dillas led 14-3.

A.J. Johnson put the Dillas on the board in the second with his 10th home run of the season, making it 1-0.

The WhiteWings took the lead right back in the third with two outs against Micah Posey (6-1). With David Fowler on first, Bub Bergstrom drew an eight-pitch walk and Kevin Griffin hit a two-run double to make it 2-1.

The Dillas tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Josh Ashton led off with a bunt single and scored on a one-out double by Keith Brachold.

David Cardona gave the WhiteWings a 3-2 lead in the fourth with his third home run of the season.

The Dillas tied it right back up again, though, when Andrew Wong led off with a walk, moved to second on a bunt-single by Stephen Douglas, to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brian Bueno, and scored on a groundout by Ashton.

The WhiteWings came charging back with four runs in the seventh as Candelario Perez led off with a single and Fowler hit an RBI-triple. Two outs later, Ryan Fox hit an RBI-single and Argelis Nunez hit his eight home run of the season to make it 14-7.

The Dillas got three runs back in the bottom of the seventh. Brachold was hit by a pitch by Bennett. Brian Daly came in, and after getting the first out, gave up four-straight singles to give the Dillas a 17-7 lead.

The WhiteWings and Dillas play game two of this three-game series tomorrow night at 7:05. Right-hander Todd Lutz (1-1) will face left-hander Jesse Rodriguez (0-2).
