San Angelo Colts News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas - The Alexandria Aces (22-17) drew to within a half-game of the San Angelo Colts (23-17) for second place on Monday, defeating the Colts 7-3 behind left-handed starter Chad Linder, who retired 15 of 16 and nine in a row at one point. The Colts, who had won seven of eight, had their first four-game winning streak of the season snapped with the loss.
Linder (3-1) had his best outing of the year, going 7 2/3 innings and allowing just two runs, both earned, on only six hits with two walks and nine strikeouts, a season high. The Colts scored first in the game though, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Wyn Diggs.
The Aces responded quickly, taking a 2-1 edge in the third and never looking back. Luis Guance and Selwyn Langaigne each hit sacrifice flies in the inning to put the Aces on top, and that was the first of four consecutive innings in which Alexandria scored.
Shortstop Rafael Ozuna and center fielder Andre Marshall each made his Alexandria debut and each hit a home run. Ozuna hit a two-run shot off Colts starter Billy McKinney in the fourth to make it 4-1 and Marshall blasted a solo homer in the eighth off Miliade Venas to make it 7-2 at that time.
McKinney fell to 0-3 in three starts as a Colt, as he surrendered five runs, all earned, on seven hits with one strikeout and two walks.
Tyrone Pendergrass went deep for the third time this season in the fifth inning to bring the Colts to within two runs, but Langaigne hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning, his sixth of the year, to give the Aces a 5-2 advantage. An RBI single by Marshall in the sixth off reliever Ryan Mulle made it 6-2.
Trailing 6-2. San Angelo got the tying run to the plate in the eighth but Linder then gave way to the closer Juan Ovalles, who struck out Jason Crosland to end the threat. Ovalles also pitched the ninth and recorded his league-leading eighth save, despite giving up a leadoff home run to Jose Torres, his sixth of the season.
The Colts continue this three-game series with Alexandria at 7:05 p.m. CT on Tuesday. San Angelo returns home for a six-game homestand, which begins on Thursday against first-place Amarillo. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. for "Thirsty Thursday" sponsored by Miller Lite and Foster Communications.
