Rockford RiverHawks News Release
FLORENCE, KY - Shaun Parker made an impressive debut for the Rockford RiverHawks. Ultimately, however, it was a losing one.
Parker (4-6), pitching for the first time since being released by Traverse City and signed by Rockford, pitched a complete game loss against the Florence Freedom. He gave up three runs on three hits to the first three batters of the game, including a three-run home run for Kyle Geswein. After then hitting Mike Galloway, Parker retired the next 17 batters and did not give up another base hit.
Parker went eight innings, striking out seven while walking just one and hitting two.
The Rockford offense could not support the lefty. Gooby Gerlits' team-leading sixth home run provided the only run for the RiverHawks in the fourth inning.
Florence starter Mitch Goins (5-5) pitched a complete game of his own, striking out eight while walking three. Goins did give up eight hits as he often had to pitch out of jams.
The RiverHawks loaded the bases in the first inning with one out but failed to score. They again loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but Richard Quihuis-Bell grounded into a 1-2-3 double play to end the threat. Rockford left eight men on base in the game.
This was the first time in six meetings this season that Rockford could not get the better of the Freedom.
The RiverHawks now travel to Chillicothe for a three-game series against the Frontier League East-leading Paints. The start times are 6:05, 5:05, and 6:05 for the Saturday-Monday series. The RiverHawks return to Loves Park for a six-game homestand against Washington and Windy City beginning Tuesday, August 8.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 10-team independent professional baseball league in its 14th season.
