Tides Rallies Finally Pay off in 12th

April 28, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk rallied back from three different deficits - the final time with a three-run rally in the 12th inning - to outlast the Indianapolis Indians 7-6 Wednesday night at Harbor Park.

Trailing 6-4 in the 12th, Christian Walker ignited Norfolk's game-winning rally with a one-out walk before Dariel Alvarez singled off of former Tide Jorge Rondon (1-1). Trey Mancini then plated Walker with a double down the right field line - Mancini's third hit of the game - pulling the Tides within 6-5 and putting runners on second and third. After an intentional walk and a strikeout, Xavier Avery and Michael Almanzar worked consecutive bases loaded walks to plate two runs and give Norfolk its first walk-off win of the season.

The game was tied 3-3 after nine innings before a heavy rainstorm caused a one hour and 51 minute delay. When play was resumed, Indy plated a run in the 10th inning, only to see Norfolk knot the contest in the bottom half of the frame on a two-out single by Mancini that scored Ryan Flaherty.

Flaherty, in his first game with Norfolk after being optioned from Baltimore, went 3-for-6 with a double and a run scored.

The Tides had trailed the contest 3-0 entering the seventh inning before rallying against right-hander Jared Hughes, who was down from Pittsburgh on a Major League rehab assignment. The Tides got on the board with two outs in the inning when Almanzar plated Henry Urrutia with a sharp single to third base, and Norfolk tied the game three batters later on a two-run single by Walker.

Norfolk used six relievers in the contest, with Richard Rodriguez (2-0) earning the victory despite allowing a two-run home run in the 12th inning to Cole Figueroa.

Making his first appearance in the Orioles organization, Tides starter David Hale yielded two runs on four hits over two innings of work. Hale, who had not pitched since a seven-pitch relief outing for Colorado on April 19, struck out one without walking a batter while throwing 22 of his 33 pitches for strikes.

Indianapolis starter Steven Brault turned in an impressive outing, as the 23-year-old southpaw fired six shutout innings. Brault, who had previously spent time in the Orioles system before being traded to Pittsburgh in 2015, struck out 11 while yielding just one walk and four hits.

In a quick turnaround, the Tides wrap up their homestand Thursday afternoon in a 12:05 contest with the Indians. Ariel Miranda (0-1, 3.00) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Jameson Taillon (2-0, 1.65).

Notes: Prior to Wednesday's game, infielder Ryan Flaherty and David Hale were activated to Norfolk's roster after being optioned from Baltimore. To make room on the roster, infielder Garabez Rosa was transferred to Double-A Bowie and right-handed pitcher Terry Doyle was released...David Hale was the eighth starting pitcher Norfolk has used in 20 games this season...Trey Mancini tripled in the fourth inning for his first Triple-A hit...The time of game (3:33), innings played (12) and rain delay (1:51) were Norfolk's longest of the season.
