ZEBULON, N.C. - Keegan Thompson and Tyler Peyton combined to retire the last 25 batters Saturday in a one-hitter and 1-0 win for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans over the Carolina Mudcats from Five County Stadium.

Thompson (2-3) earned the win with six shutout innings, only ceding one hit to the Mudcats (25-24), a single to Keston Hiura in the first, while striking out a career-high eight batters. After the Hiura single, the righty retired the last 16 men he faced before Peyton earned his third save of the season with three perfect innings.

The only run the Pelicans (21-28) would need came in the third inning. Jhonny Pereda lined a single into right to plate Andruw Monasterio and give the Birds their 1-0 lead off of Conor Harber (1-2), who took the loss after only allowing one run over five innings.

Connor Myers reached three times, going 2-for-3 with a double and walk, to pace a Myrtle Beach offense that banged out seven hits.

The Birds and the Muddies meet Sunday for game three of a four-game set with Sunday's 6 p.m. contest. RHP Tyson Miller (3-4, 4.22 ERA) pitches against Carolina LHP Nathan Kirby (0-3, 6.09 ERA). Coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, the MiLB First Pitch app and TuneIn.

The 2018 season is the 20th season for the Pelicans franchise and fourth as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For tickets visit MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/tickets, call (843) 918-6000, or visit the Pelicans Box Office.
