Akron RubberDucks News Release

Erie's Dominic Ficociello was 2-3, with a stolen base and RBI, and five Erie pitchers combined on a five-hitter, as the SeaWolves claimed a 4-3 victory over the Akron RubberDucks Sunday afternoon at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio.

Turning Point

The RubberDucks (32-25) rallied in the ninth inning with a two-out, two-run, bases-loaded single by Connor Marabell off Erie closer John Schreiber. Marabell's hit cut Erie's lead to 4-3. Erie's Mark Ecker started the inning and walked a pair of batters and gave up an infield hit with two outs. Ecker was lifter in favor of Schreiber who served up Marabell's two-RBI single. Schreiber, however, retired Willi Castro on the next pitch, inducing a grounder to second baseman Will Maddox to end the game with two men on base. It was Screiber's sixth save.

Mound Presence

Akron starter Zach Plesac (2-1) suffered his first Double-A loss after giving up four runs in 4.1 innings. The bulk of the damage came in the third inning when the SeaWolves (21-34) scored three runs on five singles to right field. Ficociello capped the scoring with a two-out single to right to make it 3-0. It was Plesac's first loss in three starts for Akron. David Speer (2.2 IP), Nick Pasquale (1.0 IP) and Henry Martinez (1.0 IP) all provided scoreless relief for the RubberDucks.

Duck Tales

The Ducks were held hitless until the fifth inning by Erie starter Anthony Castro, who made his Double-A debut. Castro walked the tightrope, issuing seven walks in four innings, but allowed just an unearned run in the fifth when he walked Tyler Krieger and allowed single up the middle by Ka'ai Tom. Trent Szkutnik (1-1) entered from the bullpen and uncorked an errant pick-off throw to first, allowing Krieger to score and close the game to 4-1.
