Thirteen pitches into the first inning Friday night, Corpus Christi's Edison Frias had walked the bases loaded. Six innings later, he was still on the hill and on his way to a win. The RockHounds did get on the board in the first inning, but scored only two runs (one on a double play and one on Viosergy Rosa's double), missing the opportunity for a big inning.

The Hooks would make the 'Hounds pay, rallying from the 2-0 deficit with a three-run third inning. Danry Vasquez led off with a line drive single to right-center field and Mott Hyde followed with a triple to the gap in right-center. Both swings were impressive, hit directly into winds ranging from 25 to 40 miles-per-hour throughout the game. Hyde scored on an error and Alex Bregman's double set the table for the third run of the inning, which scored on the first of three Hooks' sacrifice flies. Corpus added single runs in the fourth and fifth for a 5-2 lead.

After surviving the first inning, Frias walked the leadoff batter in the second and allowed a one-out single to put two men on. From there, he retired 14 of the last 16 batters he faced, allowing a walk to Wade Kirkland in the fourth and Matt Chapman's league-leading ninth home run of the season, an impressive (to say the least) drive out to right field through the relentless West Texas wind.

The RockHounds put two men on against Aaron West in the ninth, but the Hooks reliever struck out pinch hitter Franklin Barreto and Brett Vertigan back-to-back to end the game. West went the last three innings in relief of Frias to earn his third save.

The RockHounds

... are 17-11 (10-4 at Security Bank Ballpark and 7-7 on the road) ... have won seven of their last 10 ... finished the homestand 5-3 ... are 6-2 against Corpus Christi (including a four-game sweep at Corpus, April 25-28).

... fell to 4.5 games behind first place Frisco in the Texas League South Division after the RoughRiders (21-6) again belted the Missions, 6-1, in San Antonio. Frisco and the 'Hounds now meet for the first time this season (see next paragraph) and, despite the first half not yet at the midway point, the series in the Metroplex is an important one in the pennant race. The RockHounds will leave Frisco anywhere from a half-game to 8.5 games behind the Riders. Corpus Christi stays eight behind Frisco with San Antonio a remarkable 12.5 games out (with fewer than 30 games having been played).

.. now begin an eight-game, nine-day road trip on Saturday night in Frisco against the first-place RoughRiders at Dr Pepper Ballpark. The four-game series (May 7-10) is followed by an off day on Wednesday (the only day off in a 39-day stretch of the Texas League schedule) and a four-game set against the Missions in San Antonio (Thursday-Sunday, May 12-15). The club returns home for an eight-game homestand beginning on Monday, May 16.
