York Revolution News Release

(Central Islip, NY) - The York Revolution batted around in a four-run top of the ninth inning, grabbing a huge 8-4 victory over the Long Island Ducks in the series opener on Monday night in front of 5,112 fans at Bethpage Ballpark. The first-place Revs (37-27) maintain their three-game lead in the Freedom Division with six to play in the season's first half, lowering their magic number to clinch a playoff berth to four.

The Revs built an initial lead in the middle innings, but had to overcome their share of adversity and a Ducks comeback to earn the victory.

York struck quickly in the top of the first as Michael Rockett rapped a one-out double to right and advanced to third on an error by right fielder Fehlandt Lentini. Joel Guzman then smashed a first-pitch RBI single to left against a drawn-in infield for a 1-0 lead.

Long Island tied the score in its half of the first as Anthony Vega led off with a triple down the first base line and came home on Cody Puckett's one-out single to left, evening things at 1-1.

The Revs went back in front in the fourth. Guzman led off with a single to center, and after a fielder's choice, Andres Perez smacked a double down the third base line to put two in scoring position. Alfredo Marte followed with an RBI single up the middle, and with two outs, Salvador Paniagua pounded an RBI single of his own to right field for a 3-1 lead.

Rockett's base running helped make it a 4-1 lead in the fifth. After legging out an infield single and advancing on a wild pitch, he would score from second base on a two-out error when first baseman Mike Blanke couldn't handle a throw from third.

Revs starter Frank Gailey cruised into the sixth, having faced the minimum since the first inning. Things took a turn, however, as Vega reached on a bloop double to start the sixth. Following a one-out walk, Gailey missed on a close first pitch to Puckett who, following a mound visit, connected on a three-run homer to left, tying the score at 4-4. The Revs lost their lead and their starting pitcher, as Gailey was quickly ejected for arguing balls and strikes during the home run trot.

Reliever Manny Corpas came up huge, recording the final two outs of the sixth and leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, fanning Lew Ford to strike out the side for his fourth strikeout in 1.2 innings.

Luis Perdomo (2-1) followed with a scoreless eighth to pick up the win.

Paniagua set the stage for York's ninth inning rally on a leadoff single to left. After advancing on a passed ball, Paniagua was thrown out at third on a bunt attempt for the first out. The Revs contested the call, but went right back to work as Rockett jumped on a single to left, setting up Guzman who ripped a go-ahead single up the middle, plating Travis Witherspoon for a 5-4 lead. Michael Burgess reached on an infield single to load the bases. Ducks closer Todd Coffey then induced a potential inning-ending double play grounder but shortstop Dan Lyons bobbled and then kicked the ball away, allowing two more runs to score on the error. Brandon Chaves would add a two-out RBI single to right to provide the final margin.

Mike DeMark struck out two in a scoreless ninth to close it out in a non-save situation.

The Revs out-hit the Ducks 13-9, and were led by Rockett and Guzman who each enjoyed 3-for-5 nights. Rockett scored three times, tying a season-high for a Revs base runner, while Guzman drove in two, increasing his season total to 44 RBI, one off the league lead.

Notes: York improves to 3-2 on its current road trip with three games remaining. The Revs are a season-high 10 games over .500 for the sixth time. The Revs are now 6-1 vs. the Ducks, winning in their first visit to Bethpage Ballpark this season. The Revs have claimed each of their last four wins by taking the lead in the eighth inning or later. It is the Revs' ninth win in their last at-bat. Rockett has now hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games, batting .364 since June 9 on that stretch. With 3.2 shutout innings from the bullpen, Revs relievers have now allowed just one run in 14.2 innings over the last four games. The Ducks committed three errors after entering the game with the fewest errors of any team in the league (47). York righty James Simmons (4-2, 4.16) will face Long Island lefty Darin Downs (4-4, 4.50) on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile app beginning at 6:15 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
