SAUGET, Ill. -- Normal RHP Michael Schweiss silenced the Grizzlies' bats Thursday night, as Gateway fell to the CornBelters 10-2 at GCS Ballpark.

Schweiss (8-7) pitched a complete game eight-hitter to help Normal (53-34) avoid the sweep. The loss snapped the Grizzlies (37-39) four-game winning streak.

Gateway starter Dakota Smith (2-3) struggled out of the gate. He walked Mark Micowski to start the game and then issued back-to-back doubles. The second double by Aaron Dudley scored both Micowski and Santiago Chirino and put Normal ahead 2-0. The CornBelters added a third run on an RBI groundout from Pat McKenna and it turned out to be all the run support Schweiss needed.

Schweiss held the Grizzlies off the board in seven of the nine innings. Garrett Vail was responsible for both runs and put Gateway on the board in the bottom of the third. Madison Beaird singled to start the inning and advanced to second base on a wild throw. Vail then delivered an RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit to 5-1.

Smith's night ended after allowing two of the first three batters to reach in the fourth inning. Collin Shaw came in to pitch in relief and Normal touched him up for five runs. In total, Smith and Shaw allowed five runs on four hits in the inning, while walking three. The rough inning put the game seemingly out of reach with Normal leading 10-1.

Vail came through again with another RBI single in the bottom half of the fifth, but that's all the offense the Grizzlies would muster. Shaw and Kyle Bouman kept the CornBelters off the scoreboard in the final five frames to keep Gateway in it, but it wouldn't matter.

Vail and Craig Massoni paced the Gateway offense with two hits each.

After the series win, the Grizzlies travel to Schaumburg, IL for a weekend series with the Boomers. RHP Vince Molesky (4-6, 5.82) will take the mound for Gateway Friday night. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. Sam Levitt will call the action on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs on 101 ESPN's digital platforms and 1400 AM KJFF.
