Grand Rapids Griffins News Release

Grand Rapids, MI - Grand Rapids Griffins broadcasts on NEWSRADIO WOOD 1300 were selected by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters as the best sports radio program in a secondary market at the 2003 MAB Broadcast Excellence Awards, held Feb. 18 in Lansing.

For the second straight year, Bob Kaser's commentary was honored as the "best locally originated, regularly scheduled sportscast, play-by-play or live sports coverage" in the markets of Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor, Flint, and the Saginaw tri-cities area.

Griffins hockey was nominated for the award by NEWSRADIO WOOD 1300 and won based on the criteria of presentation, production values and interest of stories presented.

"The Griffins continue to feel fortunate to have an NHL-caliber broadcaster in Bob Kaser," said Bob Sack, Griffins senior vice president of sales and marketing. "We appreciate the talented way he conveys the excitement of Griffins hockey to our fans."

A Kalamazoo native who grew up in Flint, Kaser has been an institution in hockey broadcasting since 1979, when he was hired as a public relations assistant and radio color commentator for the International Hockey League's Flint Generals. After three seasons in his hometown, Kaser's career made stops with the IHL's Saginaw Gears (1982-83), the Eastern League's Erie Blades (1983-84) and the Western League's Seattle Thunderbirds (1984-89).

After reuniting with Flint in 1989, Kaser spent 10 seasons (1990-2000) as director of communications and broadcasting for the IHL's Kansas City Blades, twice earning the Bob Chase Award as IHL Broadcaster of the Year (1994 and 1998). He returned to his home state in 2000 to assume his current role as the "Voice of the Griffins" and executive director of broadcasting and community relations for DP Fox Sports and Entertainment.
