RedHawks Jump out to Lead, but Canaries Win 11-5

Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

FARGO, ND - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks jumped out to an early lead, but the wheels fell off the tracks in the late innings and the RedHawks dropped game one of four 11-5 to the Sioux Falls Canaries in front 2,980 fans at Newman Outdoor Field on Monday night.

Things got off to a great start. Zach Penprase, batting in the leadoff slot for the first time this season, belted a solo shot off Canaries' starter Joe Bircher in the first inning to take the 1-0 lead. Joe Dunigan blasted his third homer of the year, this one a two run bomb, to take a 3-0 lead in the second. It looked as if the RedHawks had gotten to Bircher, who coming into the game was 6th in the American Association in ERA.

However, he would settle down in the next four frames. He gave up one more run in the bottom half of the sixth, a single from Frank Salerno that brought in Staley. Bircher walked away with the no-decision, going six innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts.

RedHawks starter Taylor Stanton had a decent outing. He went 5.1 innings, gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out three. He cruised through the first three frames. Stanton retired nine of the first 10 Canaries he faced. In the fourth he gave up two runs, one on a Michael Wing RBI single and another on a R.J. Perucki single.

The wheels fell off the tracks in the sixth. Stanton gave up three runs, two of them being earned, and was relieved by Bryan Blough.

Mike Noteware began the seventh and went 2.2 innings. He surrendered an RBI double to Brian Humphries scoring Harrison Kain. It was tied 5-5, and the run put him in line to take the loss.

The Canaries would put things out of reach in the ninth. They scored five runs pushing their lead to 11-5 and Fargo-Moorhead could not muster a comeback. Zach Penprase acknowledged the continued frustrations, saying, "The bottom line is we've got to keep trying to do stuff to win games. Instead of trying, we've got to do it."

Fargo-Moorhead drops to 7-17 while Sioux Falls improves to 12-13. The two teams return tomorrow night for game two of a four game set. The RedHawks are in the midst of a seven game homestand, with the Winnipeg Goldeyes coming to town after the series with Sioux Falls.
